Searching for Shade

We were up by 6:30 to make our coffee and oatmeal and pack up. Once again, we are very grateful for the camper the Bairds loaned us right by the entry to Zion National Park. What a privilege to take in that view.

We decided to make one final walk in Zion and returned to the Kolob Canyons Road. This time we wanted to hike to the end of it. We have been told it was 2 miles... turned out it was 5 miles roundtrip. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring water with us and got dehydrated and very hot. It was beautiful, though! Porsche learned to search for shade. At one point, the sidewalk was in the shade and both Porsche and I stretched out to enjoy the cool pavement.

It was nice to have an 80 mph speed limit along I-15. We drove through vast high mountain meadows and past some cultivated fields, scrub pines, hills, and “brown-eyed-Susans” in the ditches.

Fishlake National Forest was at about 5,000 feet with distant mountain peaks (the Pahvant Range) at 9,500 to over 12,000 feet above sea level. (We used to live at 12,500 feet in the Andes!)

In the late afternoon we met up with our great-nephew, Noah, in Oren, Utah, for ice cream at Handel’s. We enjoyed both the ice cream and the conversation. We are impressed by the man Noah is becoming.

Driving on to Heber City we saw awesome mountains and a spectacular waterfall. There were also huge, expensive homes. Woody was impressed by the number of Cessna Citations at the local airport.

We zoomed past the vast, impressive Deer Creek Reservoir in crazy traffic and arrived at our quaint, small motel around 6 PM.
