Killer Burros!

As we left Havasu City, Arizona, it was already 90° and felt very hot. Somehow 90° here felt hotter than 100° at Joshua Tree. Before we left town, we looked at the London Bridge, which is the actual bridge disassembled in London and reassembled in Havasu City. I guess someone had to do it.

We have driven over 8000 miles already!

The Mojave mountains were east of us, and the Colorado river to the west as we drove. There were sandy foothills and dunes with some desert bushes, scrub plants, and cactus… much like Joshua Tree.

We took a side trip, which took a long time, but the winding, narrow, steep roads and mountain views were amazing! I drove to avoid getting carsick again. There were burros wandering along the road. We learned that they kill dogs by grabbing them by the neck and throwing them! We decided to be very careful with Porsche.

We stopped in historic Oatman, which was quite the tourist trap, but interesting. It’s strange how they were almost no cars anywhere on the road, yet, Oatman was packed with tourists. We enjoyed a great root beer float at the historic saloon/hotel where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent their honeymoon. We also watched part of a reenactment of a gun fight on the street. Still, we were  happy to leave there.

We drove 69 miles north on Highway 93 with no towns on the whole route. However, there was a strange cemetery! At a scenic point in the mountains we found a place where the ashes of many motorcyclists are spread and weird grave markers are placed. Woody actually liked the cross fabricated out of welded pistons and rods.

We stopped and saw the Hoover Dam. It was very hot and sunny, so we ate a cold lunch in the car while running the air conditioning.

We arrived at the home of our friends, the Bairds late that afternoon. It was lovely to see them! We enjoyed a burrito dinner and a
long walk with the dogs. It was interesting to see scorpions among the rocks with Sarah‘s black light.
