Jackpot in Las Vegas

We were up before 5 AM in order to take an exhilarating hike with our friend, David. The walk up the mountain was strenuous, and at times I didn’t think I would make it to the top. However, the 360° view of Las Vegas and the surrounding red rock canyons was like hitting the jackpot.

We could feel our 68 year old knees while scrambling down the steep slopes. However, returning to the house we were rewarded with Sarah’s Swedish crêpes to quickly celebrate David‘s birthday before he had to teach online. He is a professor of architecture at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

We did a quick load of wash and then stopped for groceries. Once again, we drove through lots of desert. We also saw many casinos near the border of Nevada. Billboards advertised offers of $27 for an overnight stay in a hotel. We can easily turn down the gambling, but we were tempted by that $27 offer!

Still, we resisted all temptation and headed on towards Zion National Park. Our friend Sarah had recommended a few places to eat, so we stopped in one of them in a small town and enjoyed a great hamburger and tomato and spinach quiche.

We arrived in Springdale in the late afternoon to settle into the camper the Bairds  had graciously loaned us. It is located on their property near the south entrance to the national park. From their lot we marveled at the spectacular views of lovely, colorful canyon walls and the muddy La Virgen River. Thanks, David and Sarah!! The views from the back of the camper were worth the entire trip.

We opted to hit the sack early in order to make the most of Wednesday.
