Our predicted rain and thunderstorms last night never came, but it did start to rain by 8 AM. It would not have been fun to pack up camp this morning!
We left Hill City in the rain and dense fog shortly before 9 AM. The scenery was lovely, even in the rain. We were surrounded by green pines, golden aspen, and rock cliffs. It has been fun to see so many things and places we enjoyed in the Black Hills in 2021.
We drove through rolling hills, golden-green grass, and occasional scrub pines.
We have been listening to Ephesians chapter 2 in various versions as we drive, preparing to rejoin our Lanesboro/Preston small group study.
We took a detour through Buffalo Gap National Grasslands and added one more national park… the Badlands. That makes 11 national parks or monuments on this trip.
In the Badlands, we saw plenty of buffalo and multi-layered, multi-colored, eroded cliffs, hoodoos, mesas, gaps, grasslands, and an “occasional speck of a tree.“ The Badlands covers a vast area, though it’s not as impressive as Cedar Breaks, or Bryce Canyon. It looks a bit like Israel… the Dead Sea Scrolls area. We drove 27 miles in the Badlands and got out a couple of times to walk and observe the beauty.
We stopped in Kadoka for gas, finally paying prices similar to the beginning of our trip! We fixed sandwiches to eat on the road. Near the Missouri River the sun popped out, and it was beautiful!
We planned out our final meal months ago. We went to McKenzie River for pizza, and this time it did not disappoint! Excellent! This leg of the trip did not require new adjectives, except that the pizza was yummy, delicious, tasty, flavorful, savory, delectable, and scrumptious!
