I got up early in our motel room in Clarkesville, feeling miserable with my sore throat. We took off around 10 AM and drove a lovely four-lane highway before turning north along “the land between the lakes.” We had the lovely highway almost all to ourselves. The road was lined with mixed woods and had gentle hills, curves, and mixed shades of dark and light green.
We crossed into Kentucky around 11 AM. There were lots of cemeteries and few living people we could see! We stopped briefly to see the lake, and then drove over a bridge with a view of the Kentucky dam. We drove through historic Paducah, which was fairly unremarkable.
We drove in one tiny corner of Illinois before crossing the Mississippi, so we added that to our list of 4 provinces and 14 states visited so far. We could have added Ohio when we were driving in Pennsylvania if we had only taken a half mile detour.
The landscape in Missouri suddenly became very flat, and was mostly fields and crops of brown corn and soy beans. Then we drove on winding, slightly hilly, wooded roads, until arriving at our campsite at Lake Wappapello State Park. It was glorious with shade, grass, and a lake view. We were able to set up in less than an hour. We had visited the park briefly on our drive to Texas in January and had hoped to stay here on this cross country trip. The park did not disappoint!
We had a bit of a scare when we left to explore and take a hike. Woody got suddenly sweaty, lightheaded, pale, and nauseated. We’re still unsure of why that happened. I drove him back to the tent and got a fan on him with a damp washcloth. He improved and has been fine since then.
Porsche and I walked along the lakefront. I started a fire from wood scavenged from empty campsites. I cooked myself supper while Woody rested. I got up at 11 PM with my sore throat and looked at the super blue moon.
